Anorthosite / æ n ˈ ɔːr θ ə s aɪ t / is a phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock characterized by its composition: mostly plagioclase feldspar (90–%), with a minimal mafic component (0–10%). Pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, and olivine are the mafic minerals most commonly present.

Anorthosites are of enormous geologic interest, because it is still not fully understood how they y: Plagioclase. The percentage of plagioclase versus other minerals in the anorthosites, leucogabbros, gabbros, and OAGNs or OGNs, rocks with little or no potash feldspar, can be estimated from roughly linear plots when plagioclase compatible elements, such as Na 2 O, Al 2 O 3, and Sr, or plagioclase incompatible elements, such as MgO, FeO, and Sc, are plotted Cited by: One crystal “book” of biotite was reported to be 12 feet across and four feet thick.

The sedimentary deposits immediately north of Madoc which survived the turbulence of the shield’s late stage activity were typically converted to marble.

There are even small deposits of fluorite, feldspar, graphite, magnetite, apatite and garnet. Centre III magmatism of the Coldwell Alkaline Complex is represented by alkali feldspar syenites and alkali feldspar quartz syenites.

In order of intrusion from earliest to youngest these are (1) synneuritic magnesio-hornblende syenite, (2) perthitic ferro-edenite syenite, (3) contaminated ferro-edenite syenite and (4) quartz syenite. Topics include: structural state of feldspar minerals, applications to granitic rocks; chemical evolution of mica, pyroxene and amphibole minerals in plutonic bodies; phase relationships; review of the mineralogy of specific plutonic rock-types (e.g.

Veevers () reviewing the alkaline rocks occurrences related to Gondwanaland indicated that in Africa, and among the – Ma investigated, a prominent group of A-type granites, nepheline syenites and carbonatite complexes clusters around – Ma.

These are principally related to post-collision tectonic around cratonic regions and concentrated in the Pan-Gondwanaland. Kyshtymites are the unique corundum-blue sapphire-bearing variety of anorthosites of debatable geological origin found in the Ilmenogorsky-Vishnevogorsky complex (IVC) in the South Urals, Russia.

Their mineral association includes corundum-sapphire, plagioclase (An61–93), muscovite, clinochlore, and clinozoisite. Zircon, churchite-(Y), monazite-(Ce), and apatite group minerals are found as. Whereas the alteration isochron for the plagioclase is governed by the radiogenic Sr and Rb 87 gain, the K‐feldspar alteration isochron reflects the relatively high loss of common Sr. As a result, the calculated present‐day composition of the unaltered K‐feldspar in this granite occupies a surprising position on the reference isochron.

The rocks have some of the coolest names in petrology; charnockites and enderbites, khondalites, anorthosites and syenites along with granitic rocks and sedimentary rocks like quartzites. Over the last three years, a mapping project carried out by the Ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles has revealed the presence of several rare earth element (REE)–bearing syenitic intrusions in this area. The Bethampudi layered anorthosite complex at the border zone of Archaean supracrustal rocks of Khammam district, Eastern Ghats shows normal stratification predominantly in the form of rhythmic layering and often exhibits of zebra layering. Graded bedding and cumulate structures are also noticed.

The rocks of the study area are classified based on petrography into anorthositic rocks, gabbroic. A third generation of potassic feldspar (enriched in an assortment of trace elements and deduced to have crystallized from a carbonated high-K melt) forms transecting zoned veins in which.

The Na-Mg-Fe/sup 2 +/+Mn plot is used to compare NS and IJ pyroxenes with pyroxenes from nepheline syenites from S. Qoroq Centre, Greenland, and the Coldwell Complex intrusions, Ontario.

Trends from the three areas are similar, but differences exists. Zoning in individual NS grains is greater than ranges for individual intrusions from S. Qoroq. Kim A. The Kirkland Lake gold mines are located in the township of Kirkland Lake, km ESE of Timmins, 80 km west of Rouyn-Noranda, and km north of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada (#Location: 48° 8' 12"N, 80° 4' 13"W). Kirkland Lake is one of the classic greenstone gold fields in the Abitibi Belt of the Superior Province.

Sincethe field has produced approximately t ( Moz) of gold. All these minerals were emplaced at about the culmination of metamorphism of the Grenville series. Earlier epochs as yet undated include the premetamorphic intrusions of anorthosites, gabbros, and syenites and the period of Grenville sedimentation.

Presumably the inception of this sedimentation occurred some x 10 9 or more years ago. Aggregate Permittees Compliance Assessment Report - Aggregate Resources Act Author: Y Yao Subject: Aggregate Permittees Compliance Assessment Report - Aggregate Resources Act Created Date: 6/10/ AM.

Back to Rocks and Minerals Articles Kathy Feick Corundum Al2O3 Corundum is a very hard, tough and stable mineral. For all practical purposes, it is the hardest mineral, second only to diamond.

It is unaffected by acids and most environments. The name corundum was first derived either from the Sanskrit word Kuirvinda or from the Indian name for corundum, Kauruntoka. Named for its sodium content, Sodalite forms in nepheline syenites, phonolites and other related rocks, and can also be found in hydrothermally altered calcium-rich rocks and within vugs and cavities in volcanic blocks.

A widespread mineral, Sodalite is prized as an ornamental stone. The ferrocarbonatites at Swartbooisdrif, however, are distinctly younger than both the anorthosites and the syenites as is evidenced by pyrochlore U–Pb ages of c.
